General information only
Everything on honesteldercare.com is general educational information about elder care costs and payment programs in the United States. It is provided for a broad audience and does not account for any family's specific finances, health, contracts, or state rules.
Not professional advice
- Not financial advice. We are not financial advisors. Decisions about savings, home equity, annuities, and insurance belong with a licensed professional who knows your full situation.
- Not legal advice. We are not attorneys. Medicaid planning, trusts, powers of attorney, and guardianship carry legal consequences that an elder law attorney in your state should review.
- Not medical advice. We do not diagnose, recommend treatments, or judge the care any individual needs. Care-level decisions belong with the person's clinicians.
- Not tax advice. Tax discussion here is general and cited to IRS publications; your filing position belongs with a tax professional.
Figures are medians and estimates
Cost figures on this site are survey medians, published program amounts, or labeled estimates. A median means half of surveyed cases cost more. Your parent's actual bill will differ based on state, facility, care needs, and contract terms, and only a written quote from a specific provider is a price you can rely on.
Program rules change
Medicaid, Medicare, VA, and tax rules change with legislation, regulation, and annual adjustments, and Medicaid rules differ by state. Confirm current rules with the administering agency before acting. Where we know a rule is scheduled to change, we say so on the page.
Emergencies
This site cannot help in an emergency. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. To report elder abuse or neglect, contact your state's Adult Protective Services or call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116.
